The A4 is back, and better than ever!

Kinja'd!!!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was determined to be overheating leading to the disintegration of the relatively little material that was left. A chunk of it actually snapped off in the gruesome event that let to it manifesting as a potential hydraulic failure. The flywheel needed replacement as well, pushing the total out the door to over $1,900!

Kinja'd!!!

Moral of the story: never lend out your manual car in San Francisco, much less to an immediate family member!

At least it should be good for another 100k miles. With no major maintenance items coming up any time soon, this car feels like it’s ready to be road tripped! Unfortunately, with my 335 also running strong, I’m still finding myself debating selling it. Suggest a NP in the comments!

What was more expensive for Americans, keeping Audis running, or the Marshall plan?

Ouch, man, that’s a big one. Funny, I’m also considering selling my blue, manual, german, awd wagon.

We should just trade.

I’ll be in Santa Cruz tomorrow through Friday. I’ll give you $350 and buy you tacos.

$175/day rental doesn’t seem that bad! What if you burn up the clutch, though?

Very few out there, you're basically selling it to someone who wants this exact model and options. I say aim high and settle.

I loved my 2005.5 A4 with manual trans. Great car. My wife however hated it. She had a coworker who had one that she hated. Therefore she hated mine. Women are nuts.

We sacrifice for those we love.  If it helps, I dropped $2900 on the Evo last week for clutch, timing belts, water pump, seals and an EGR issue. It hurt, but the car is running strong.

I can drive a stick. I drove my Mazda across the bay bridge a few years ago. I got a leg cramp going through the toll plaza.

This one’s gonna be expensive for my brother. I plan on charging him for the flywheel + half the labor. Next time he can trash a cheap rental instead of my car.

Yeah, honestly I wouldn’t have minded the expense much if I hadn’t already been thinking about selling. Now I feel like I need to keep it for a bunch more.

I brought my Ralliart to the dealer today for a check engine light that could be related to the timing belt. Unfortunately, they couldn’t make an official determination so I’m a little stuck waiting to see if it comes back. They did charge me $195 to turn off the light, so that’s great. I will admit though, the service dude was nice and gave me his card in case I ever need a hookup on Mazda parts (he used to be a Mazda service manager). They tried to sell me a serpentine belt and pulley replacement for $850, along with brakes, and wiper blades (wtf). I’ll do all that myself, thanks.

Didn’t realize you have a Ralliart. Is it a wagon?

Nah, just a sedan. I kind of wish it was a wagon. I’d probably like it a lot more. I’ve neglected it (by my standards - though better maintenance than 99% of people). It’s a car that would be epic with about 300lb weight reduction and a manual transmission.

1900 isn’t that bad, it’s about what I paid for a clutch in my GTI recently. I think that had a new flywheel also.

I got pretty lucky that I had already done some clutch job shopping prior to the incident and that the one place that was open on a Saturday was towards the bottom of the pricing range. Some places were charging more than 2k without a flywheel. It’s generally open season in San Francisco because there are so many high earners with zero interest or time to deal with their fancy cars.

I once let a coworker drive my 525i and I was sitting next to him when he did a 5th to 1st downshift, missing the targeted 3rd gear in spectacular fashion, with the expected expensive result. Never again. At least the clutch was old, with over 231,000 miles on it, so the damage we relatively minor.

Other than the dealership , the only person to drive my Mazda5 6MT has been my mother, and she’s the one that taught me to drive stick so I felt it should be OK. When I was a child a remember sitting in the back of her friend’ s Lotus Cortina whilst he taught her heel-and-toe downshifting, so I knew she had the skills, even if she hadn’t used them in a few decades.
